Historically, numerous techniques have been applied by a multitude of jurisdictions dealing with roadway pavements. Pavement Design Two theoretical pavement types Flexible Pavement – Resists traffic loading through “internal friction”.
An unpaved road with a compacted crushed stone course is a pure flexible pavement. Old-fashioned asphalt pavement (thin asphalt layer over a granular base) is mostly a flexible pavement.

Design and detailing of joints is important for these pavements. All three conventional pavement types have been used as overlays, although jointed plain overlays are most common.
Prestressed and precast concrete pavements are used for similar applications as conventional concrete pavements, but have been used infrequently. Book Description An International Textbook, from A to Z Highway Engineering: Pavements, Materials and Control of Quality covers the basic principles of pavement management, highlights recent advancements, and details the latest industry.
This student-friendly textbook offers comprehensive coverage of pavement design and highways. Written by two seasoned civil engineering educators, the book contains precise explanations of traditional and computerized mechanistic design methods along with detailed examples of real-world pavement and highway projects.

Yoder is the author of Principles of Pavement Design, 2nd Edition, published by Wiley. Witczak is the author of Principles of Pavement Design, 3/5(3). Design of pavements has been based on experience and judgment in the past. But the design methodology has taken rapid strides towards rationality in the past few decades based on an understanding of the stresses and strains in the layers constituting the pavement and application of the concept of reliability in achieving the desired level of service during the pavement’s design life.
The objectives of the pavement design process are to guide the district pavement engineer (DPE) to select a pavement type, and design the pavement with an approved method using all the information needed to provide a structure that is capable of carrying traffic loads with minimum physical deterioration, maximum safety, and maximum ride comfort.
Pavement should also be constructed in a way that is as friendly to environment as possible. Durability means longer service life; that is, the pavement structure must have enough strength and resistance to deformation. In fact, all of the current pavement design methods were established based on durability, which is the core of pavement design.
Addressing the interactions between the different design and construction variables and techniques this book illustrates best practices for constructing economical, long life concrete pavements.
The book proceeds in much the same way as a pavement construction project. First, different alternatives for concrete pavement solutions are outlined.
