Dragonfish by Vu Tran purports to tell the story of an Oakland cop, Robert, searching for his ex-wife Suzy (Hong) in Las Vegas and learning she has a long-lost daughter who is a poker player. He has been "hired" by Suzy's new husband (Sonny) to find her and there is great animosity between Robert and Sonny/5.

Dragon Fish offers some good reading. But my hesitation in rating it higher is because it reads to me like a borderline parody.

It's like a graphic The dragon fish book or comic book without pictures. I've been the scenes before; I've read the dialogue before.

I take it the author is young because many young writers become enamored with a style/5(). In Dragonfish, Suzy writes about leaving Vietnam with her daughter, and arriving on an island before finally being resettled in the United was one of many boat people, and this aspect of the story might well be modeled after Vu Tran's real-life experiences where he and most of his family were refugees at Pulau Bidong before passage to Oklahoma.
